Why We’re Different
How Are We Different? Let us count the ways…
Dr. Linzey’s training and experience sets him apart. Unlike most chiropractors, Dr. Linzey has trained in multiple techniques throughout the United States and for an extended post-graduate experience in South America. This has allowed Dr. Linzey to analyze patient care from a deeper perspective and ensures that if your condition requires co-treatment from another health care professional, Dr. Linzey is able to accurately make the referral.
Soft Tissue Treatments
The human body is much more than just bones and therefore Dr. Linzey utilizes soft tissue techniques and instrumentation to address the entire scope of your condition focusing on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the joints. Using these soft tissue treatments along with chiropractic adjustments allows for more effective and lasting results getting you back to optimal health as quickly as possible.
Many chiropractors claim to be “sports chiropractors” but few actually have experience. Dr. Linzey is a seasoned athlete, first in football at UC Davis and then rugby with the US National Team from 1998-2002. He then coached the national team and has been involved with high performance training for 20 years. He understands the demands these athletes face and the various treatment options they can access.
Cutting Edge technology
Dr. Linzey stays current with the latest developments in technology utilizing:
- Surface Electromyographic spinal evaluation
- Motion X-ray to ascertain spinal joint range
- Arthrostim to specifically adjust joints with low force
- Vibrocussor to stimulate the nerve support network around joints
- Spinal decompression – to decrease disc injuries
- Ultrasound to decrease inflammation
Treating the Whole Person
Many chiropractors focus only on the spine. What they fail to address are conditions and dysfunction of the rest of the body. Everyone knows, more often than not, other areas of the body hurt more than just the low back. What about the knee pain you’re experiencing? It may be due to dysfunction and weakness of muscles in your feet, thighs, and hips! You deserve functionality and the ability to live a complete, wholesome life free of pain.

Conditions We Treat
Neck Pain and Shoulder Pain
Imagine the neck stress of balancing a 12 lb. bowling ball on the tips of one of your fingers. That is exactly what the top your spine must do, all day long. Since your neck is one of the nerve sensitive areas in your spine, a problem here will cause problems throughout your body.
Your neck is hard at work every moment of your waking day and even the most insignificant deviation of the bones of your spine will reduce motion and increase muscular tension leading to arthritis, scaring and pain.
Response to Stress
For most of us, the “weakest link in the chain” is the neck and shoulders, so stress (both physical and emotional) accumulates here. It’s easy to image how sitting in front of a computer for many hours per day can degrade posture and end up causing muscle pain, joint aches and headaches. Also, fear, anger and frustration can trigger neck issues with out any physical insult. In time, these chronic stressed add up and your suddenly have a “pain in the neck” leading to headaches.
Getting to the underlying cause is the only way to keep pain at bay and decreasing the accelerated aging of the spine. Safe and natural chiropractic is the most effective way toward a spine that healthy and comfortable.

Low Back Pain
Any pain at all is a big signal that something is wrong. Of course you can mask the pain with drugs for a short time but the consequence can be alarming both from side effects and the progression of your condition. Why remove the battery from the smoke detector when you can easily get at the cause?
Two Common Causes
The low back pain cause most of us suffer from is irritation from the nerve-rich facet joints that control motion at the back of each vertebra. Pain here can be a sign that those joints are mis-aligned or “shifted” causing a pinching of sensitive nerves. The discs of the lumbar spine can also be involved. They can tear, protrude and press on large nerves descending down the buttock and leg.
- You can ignore it. This will lead to progressive pain and disability.
- You can confine yourself to “bed rest. This will result in weaker muscles making your spine even more unstable. It also decreases the required motion that helps nutrition get to the joints.
- You can try physical therapy. This will stress joints that may not be able to handle the load, causing additional injury.
- You can try drugs. This will mask the pain and allow further stress to a mal-positioned spine.
- You can try surgery. There is no going back with surgery. The joints and then nerves around them are altered and are never the same. It’s best to leave surgery as an absolutely last resort.
The Chiropractic Approach
Targeted, specific chiropractic adjustments will improve spinal motion and overall function. When the spine works correctly, nerve involvement can decrease, soft tissue of spine may heal, and full motion and stability can return. Slowly turn your head to the left or right. Your chin should easily move over your shoulder. If it doesn’t, you have a limitation of motion in the upper neck that results in muscle spasm and headaches. The head will not be supported properly. Unfortunately headaches are common but not normal. They are a sign that the spine is strained or perhaps in an incorrect position, requiring additional muscle contraction to hold the head up. This can’t be good in the long run, and it’s not.
Pain drugs can have a temporary effect but at our office we use a more natural approach. Finding the cause is paramount to resolve headaches in the long term.
A thorough exam of the spine is necessary to ascertain exactly what is causing the headaches and if there is any restriction, it is likely that you will benefit from chiropractic.
We have a very high success rate with our patients with headache, so go ahead, give us a call or click here to see if you are a good candidate for chiropractic care.
Most of us have been injured during sports activities, and usually they will dissipate by themselves. But when they don’t, it’s time to do something to help start the healing process. Arm, shoulder, knee and hip pain can be the result of structural imbalance, muscle splinting, incorrect posture, or specific sport activity.
We are all seasoned athletes that have treated sports injuries for many years. But best of all, we truly enjoy our work with athletes and can identify with the bumps and bruised that sports people get along the way.

Auto Accidents and Whiplash Injuries
If you’ve been a car accident, it can be tempting to minimize your discomfort if your car sustains only slight damage. But in reality, research clearly shows that there are hidden injuries to the spine and brain during these accidents. It turns out that certain problems may not arise until 3- 6 months after injury and that it may take a full 12 months to get things under control and 24 months to resolve. This is why the insurance company will try to get you to settle your case within the first month of care.
The Four Phases of a Whiplash Injury
The body will be subject to extremely rapid intensive acceleration and deceleration in a car crash. In fact most of the physical trauma occurs in less that on half of a second! Different forces happen at different times to damage the nerves, muscles, ligaments of your neck and spine.
In Phase 1 during a rear-end accident your car seat moves under you and your middle back is flattened against the seat. During this upward and forward force, the discs and joints in your neck compress. Your torso is forced forward but at the same time your head extends backward causing shearing damage to the neck. Interestingly, much of the damage to the spine occurs before your head hits the headrest. Research has shown that headrests reduce neck injury only be 11-20%. In addition your foot will come off the brake adding to acceleration and injury.
In Phase 2 the torso has reached maximum forward speed that is 1.5 to 2 times the speed of your car, but your head is still moving backward. This strains the front of the neck where the muscles are trying (unsuccessfully) to limit extension. Eventually your head will hit the headrest where a compression injury to the top of the neck can occur. There is even additional shearing force where an abnormal “S” shaped cervical curve develops while the neck continues to move backward. Much of the whiplash damage that we see happen in this phase.
In phase 3, the trunk of your body is now lowering back down but your head and neck are at maximum forward acceleration. At this point your car is beginning to low down. Your foot will be forcefully slammed on the brake further slowing your car and increasing the flexion injuries to your neck. Your body then moves forward up against the seat belt.
In the fourth and most damaging phase of whiplash your torso is stopped by the seat and shoulder belts and your head is thrown forward (with the addition of the contraction of the muscles in the front of the neck. This violent motion tears the disc fibers, and tears ligaments and muscles forcing the bones of the neck into abnormal positions. The nerves surrounding the joints are stretched and pain responses are triggered by damage to the spinal nerve roots. The severe head motion can cause an internal brain injury.
Injuries Resulting from Whiplash Trauma
One can’t predict the specific symptoms from a particular accident because the forces of each event are varied along with factors like speed, size of car, direction of impact, sex and the physical condition of the driver. However, there are certain symptoms that are very common with whiplash.
- Neck pain
- Disc injury
- TMJ problems (jaw)
- Brain injury
- Low back pain
Sciatica is a pain that is generated from the nerves in the low back causing pain in the buttock and extending down the leg. Discs are usually involved of the pain extends past the knee. These discs can bulge or herniate due to injury or even accumulated wear and tear. The pain can be light for very severe and many times coughing and sneezing along with bending and twisting will make it worse.
This is something that should not be neglected because it can worsen limiting function.
Hope is here.
The joints of the spine can be stabilized with chiropractic care and the discs can be treated with decompression at the office. An exam can show exactly what the cause is so that you can get the healing started.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The spine isn’t the only area where the expertise of chiropractic is the best option. Most joints are susceptible to strains and sprains leading to pain and dysfunction that decrease proper motion.
The Carpal Tunnel is an arch covered by a band of ligaments that can compress nerves and cause pain, numbness and weakness. This tunnel can be “adjusted” to proper position by Dr. Lindzey decreasing pressure and pain. In addition, many times the neck will be involved where the nerves that enter the wrist are initially compressed. These are most appropriately treated by chiropractic. People are commonly surprised to hear that the cause of their pain is actually spine related.
With this injury, it is best to get conservative care first (chiropractic) before injections, drugs or surgery.

Stress comes in many forms like the stress of exercise or trying to get a home loan. But the same activity can be remarkably different for different people. Take the 35 minute run in the hills: good for a 25 year old, not for a 75 year old.
Mental and emotional stresses are extremely common and you can see the physical effects on posture in a depressed salesman or a grieving family member with the slumping shoulders and loss of spinal curves.
Recent research has pointed out that when we’re stressed, areas of our brain, specifically the hippocampus and the medial forebrain markedly slow down. Unfortunately, these are the places responsible for memory, executive functions and personality traits. In other words- these areas make us human. At the same time, our amygdala increases its function, (emotions, rage, anxiety) learning with each stimulation to be more and more sensitive. Eventually it becomes a large part of our day-to-day emotional makeup and physical ramifications result in muscular spasm, postural distortion and spinal degeneration.
Stress can’t be totally vanquished but chiropractic can decrease its physical effects.

Do you wake each morning wishing for more sleep Are you dependent on drugs to get you through the night? I’m sure you already know sleep medications can leave you feeling “out of it” in the morning. You also know that “forcing” your brain to sleep with medications is only a temporary solution to poor sleep. Poor or inadequate sleep is one of the most frustrating and cruel things one can experience.
What’s so dangerous about insomnia is that it’s not easily seen like bruise or a broken bone. It’s usually a slow progression where you may not have any idea how this happened. Suddenly you realize that you aren’t the same person you used to be. You can’t control your emotions and certainly you can’t think clearly. Your memory is shot, you have no energy, have lost your sex drive and may be looking at some serious depression.
In recent research of over 200 chiropractic patients, a full one third stated that they felt the effects on their sleep after a chiropractic adjustment and from that group, 98% reported improvement in their sleep.
The pain of turning over or even slight movements can be very disturbing when trying to sleep. During the night we are much more sensitive to pain, which can result in shallow sleep, less, REM time and overall restless sleep. Chiropractic can help because it is so effective with both acute and chronic pain.
Most asthmatic reactions are cause by hypersensitivity of the immune system and its effect on the respiratory system. The relationship between these systems depends on healthy communication from the brain to coordinate this interplay.
There are studies that suggest the communication between the spinal joints, the nervous system and the respiratory system. I believe that this is the reason so many of my patients have told me about improved breathing after treatment.
Pinched nerves in the Hands or Feet
When a vertebra is positioned incorrectly, it can pinch on the nerves exiting the spine, causing irritation and dysfunction. This is called a subluxation and can cause two different types of nerve disturbance:
Nerve Compression – Here, the nerve is compressed between two structures like bone or muscle. This is the kind of injury exemplified by thoracic outlet syndrome where the nerves of the neck are compressed by the top ribs and adjacent muscles or piriformis syndrome where the sciatic nerve is compressed by the musculature of the hip.
Nerve Facilitation – Here, the nerve root is stretched or twisted when exiting between the misaligned spinal segments.
It is important to remember that the bones of the spine don’t move unless the nervous system gives a command to the muscles surrounding the vertebra. When nerves are irritated, the feedback loop of control is broken and spinal injury – subluxation results. It is our job to locate these areas of spinal dysfunction and begin the process of healing.

Dr. Linzey graduated from Miramonte High School in Orinda, Ca. From there, he went on to UC Davis and graduated in 1997 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Human Development. Inspired to change lives through Chiropractic, he returned to school at Life Chiropractic College in Marietta, GA, graduating in 2009 with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree.
While at UC Davis, Dr. Linzey was a four-year member of the UC Davis football program. After his football career at UC Davis, he pursued a rugby career with UC Davis’ Final Four Rugby Team. After an incredibly successful rookie year, Dr. Linzey was selected to be a part of the US 7’s National Rugby team. Dr. Linzey represented the U.S. from ’98 to ’02. In that time he travelled the world enjoying new experiences and new cultures.
Stemming back to a neck injury during his football career 7 years earlier, Dr. Linzey consistently battled neck pain throughout his rugby career. With no relief and no answers from the medical community, he was forced to end his career in athletics due to unrelenting pain and decreased performance. It was eventually a team-mate who was also a Chiropractor that introduced Dr. Linzey to Chiropractic. After achieving life-changing results through Chiropractic Care, including returning to his athletic career, Dr. Linzey was inspired to help people through Chiropractic.
Dr. Linzey believes in the art, philosophy, and science of Chiropractic. He appreciates that people are spiritual beings whose lives are directed by the natural, vitalistic, and innate universal laws that control healing as long as the body is kept free of interference.
After more than 10 years away from the California Bay Area, Dr. Linzey has arrived home with a new purpose and passion to serve his community through Chiropractic. Dr. Linzey is known for using the most advanced, effective and gentle chiropractic techniques. With his advanced system of patient care, he achieves superior results for his patients even in the most chronic and difficult cases when often other methods of treatment have failed. His focus is pain relief, optimal performance and the highest quality of Life.
Dr. Davis is one of the few Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist’s in the East Bay. This is an additional three-year post-doctoral program in neurology in at USC, where Dr. Davis learned the intricate relationships between the brain and its effects on chronic pain (fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, and balance disorders. He has over 2000 hours of concentrated study in this specialty. Many doctors locally and nationally have referred difficult patients for treatment with exceptional results. Dr. Davis is known to be successful with people who have tried everything and are still suffering. His ongoing work in the field, coupled with 30 years of experience in neuromuscular conditions enable him to restore function and decrease pain.
He is a co-author of two medical books, Sports of the Lower Extremity and Alternative Medicine. In addition he has taught Neurology at Life Chiropractic College for several years.
He is trained in the latest, cutting-edge diagnostics and treatments utilizing non-drug, non-surgical brain-based therapeutics. The procedures of chiropractic neurology are largely based on the intimate connection between the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal system, mediated by sense receptors in joints and muscles.
He has successfully helped many neurologic conditions including disc injury, back pain, headache, peripheral neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, post-stroke rehabilitation, radiculopathy. Dr. Davis has dedicated his life to healing without using drugs or surgery.
In his spare time, Dr. Davis enjoys cycling, hiking, golf and music (piano and guitar). And oh, reads a great deal of scientific, health related literature with an occasional classic epic for good measure. He and his wife Brenda (a nurse case manager) have two children in college, Kaitlin and Sebastian.

Q: How does chiropractic work?
A: Chiropractic works with out drugs or surgery; rather, it is a hands-on method of treatment that is successful for many conditions because of its affect on joints (muscles, ligaments, tendons) and on the function of the nervous system. Recent studies confirm that chiropractic has a direct effect on brain function.
Nowhere is the phrase “Use It or Lose It” more applicable than in the nervous system. Chiropractic works powerfully because the chiropractic adjustment is one of the most powerful inputs to the brain and nervous system and this can revitalize a brain that has been neglected by poor posture, lack of exercise and a substandard diet.
Chiropractic’s positive affect on the joints and spine is quick and painless. Numerous studies has confirmed that is more effective than drugs, spinal injections or exercise alone. Additionally, studies show that it can can effectively treat conditions like migraine, otitis media (middle ear infections), balance disorders, arm and leg pain and high blood pressure!
Chiropractic therapy techniques are noninvasive and therefore constitute a conservative approach in the arena of health care.
Q: Are Chiropractic Adjustments are Safe?
A: By any definition, chiropractic adjustments are safe.
The argument about safety concerns is an example of “junk science” and a perennial favorite by those who have an interest in discouraging people from seeking chiropractic care.
Because of the popularity of this tactic, year after year it has been the subject of countless research projects. The result of these studies show complications from neck adjustments, the supposedly “riskiest” chiropractic procedure, are exceedingly rare:
The most recent in-depth review of the relationship between medial problems and chiropractic care, was published in the February 15, 2008 issue of Spine Journal. It looked at 10 years of hospital records, involving 100 million person-years.
There was no evidence of an increase in vertebral artery dissection risk with chiropractic, compared with medical management. Based on this review, vertebrobasilar dissection, should be considered a random and unpredictable complication of any neck movement, including cervical manipulation.
In other words, cases of serious injury are practically nonexistent. By comparison, it makes the deaths caused by over-the-counter-pain-relievers to be considerably more troubling! Although reports vary, annual deaths in the United States attributable to NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, ketoprofen and tiaprofenic acid) range from 3,200 to higher than 16,500 deaths and 76,000 hospitalizations.9
Even risk-adverse insurance companies recognize the safety of today’s chiropractic care. The premiums for malpractice insurance paid by chiropractors are a mere fraction of what medical practitioners must pay. Chiropractic care is safe.

Q: Why Fix it if it’s Not Broken?
A: Many health problems fester without serious symptoms, making correction more difficult later.
This is the “Let sleeping dogs lie” approach to health care! I feel fine. Why do I need to see a doctor?
That’s the problem with the lifestyle-induced health problems facing our culture. They quietly fester in the background, slowly worsening, often without any obvious symptom. Arterial plaque builds up. Blood pressure rises. Each morning you get out of bed a little bit slower and stiffer. You hardly notice the incremental change.
Ironically, these are often the same folks who religiously change their oil and do other preventive maintenance to lengthen the life, appearance and performance of their car!
If you like being your very best, you’ll love visiting our practice. No shots. No yucky medicine. No “healthier-than-thou” attitude. No preaching.
Q: What is a subluxation (bone out of place) & why is it so unhealthy?
A subluxation is the result of spinal bones with improper motion or position affecting nerve communications between your brain and you. Distorted nerve communications can be an underlying cause of many health problems.
A subluxation is a stress response. Muscles go into spasm. Spinal bones lock up and adjacent nerves are choked or chafed. This interferes with the control and regulation of your body. This garbles communications between the brain and parts of your body.
Distorted nerve communications can be an underlying cause of many health problems beyond just headaches and back pain. For example. Interfere with nerve impulses going to or from your stomach: stomach problems.
Your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. These nerve impulses travel through your spine. So having a spine free of subluxations is essential for optimal health.
Only a chiropractic examination can detect subluxations. And only chiropractic adjustments can reduce their effect to your nervous system, naturally.
Find out if you have subluxations before they become more serious and more difficult to correct.
